Nurse Midwives Deliver Excellent Outcomes

Texas CNM Becky Burpo prepared practice statistics from Texas Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) for 2006. Surveys were sent to all known CNMs in Texas. Data was analyzed on the responses received. Highlights of the survey include:

   72% of respondents serve Medicaid/Medicare recipients
   67% of CNMs attend births in hospitals
   15,679 births were reported by CNMs in Texas for 2006
   10.78% required transfer to physician care in labor
   5.7% cesarean section rate (national average ~ 30%)
   2.25% low birth weight/preterm infants (national average ~6.5%)
   No maternal mortality was reported
   Newborn mortality rate overall was .031% (national newborn
   mortality rate ~7%)

Nancy Jo Reedy CNM, MPH, FACNM
of Texas is the recipient of the 2007 Hattie Hemschemeyer Award, the most prestigious award of the American College of Nurse Midwives.

Nancy Jo’s many accomplishments include founding the midwifery practice at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, which is the largest midwifery service in the United States. She is currently the director of THC Nurse Midwives in Fort Worth.
